  Veterans Memorial Brick Program
The American Legion, Edward G. Bond Post 40, is planning a revision of the Veterans Memorial located in the downtown Edenton area behind the new Chowan County Courthouse.

The site will consist of 4" x 8" red bricks embossed with 3 lines of text; one line being the name of an individual serving and/or having served in any branch of the US Armed Forces, including Merchant Marine.

The individual named on the brick need not be a member of Post 40 or a resident of Chowan County, but must be an honorably discharged or deceased veteran.

Each brick will cost $50.00.  A check for that amount must accompany this application if it is mailed in.  Download a printable copy here.  If you wish to pay by credit card please complete the online form below, submit it, and you will be able to process your transaction through PayPal.

Brick characters will be 5/8" high, and each line will consist of a maximum of eighteen (18) characters, including spaces and punctuation.  See below for helpful hints in placing your text.

As we are required to order the bricks in minimum quantities of 101 in order to get the best price per brick, it may be necessary to hold your application for a period of time.  Credit card and check deposits will be held with Post funds until bricks are purchased.  If bricks cannot be purchased in a reasonable length of time, your money will be refunded in full.

Additional applications will be available at the following locations:

  • Westover Deli & General Store
  • White's Country Store
  • Whiteman's Service Center
  • WE Nixon Hardware
  • Crossroads Auto Parts & Service
  • Northern Chowan Community Center
  • Chowan Senior Center
  • J and J Barber Shop

Applications are also available by calling Dale Wright at 252482-8027, David Largent at  252-482-2198, or Haurice Toppin at 252-221-8507.

Although it is suggested that the name appear on the first line, that is at your option.  Other information that could be used include branch of service, dates of service, date of birth, date of death, birthplace, place of residence, or any information you feel is relevant.

When laying out the line of type, keep the following in mind:

  • Each line consists of a maximum of 18 characters.

  • When using numbers, each digit represents one character.  A 3-digit number represents 3 characters.

  • A space, as between  a first and last name, represents 1 character.

  • Any punctuation mark represents 1 character.

  • An abbreviated word such as "Pvt" or "Sgt" can be used with or without a period depending on space available.  The same holds true for initials; "J A Jones" is 9 characters, "J.A. Jones" is 10 characters, and "J. A. Jones" is 11 characters.

  • All lines of less than 18 characters will be centered.

Please feel free to contact Dale Wright at 252-482-8027 with any questions or suggestions.
